Explain the relationship between biochemistry and nutrition.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Open in two lines. Biochemistry is the study of the chemical constituents of living cells and their reactions. Nutrition is the science of food and how the body uses it.
2 · Draw the link. [Flow chart: food → digestion (enzymes) → absorption → metabolism (pathways, coenzymes) → energy, growth, repair; lack of a nutrient → deficiency disease]
3 · Give the links with examples.
Digestion: amylase, pepsin, lipase.
Metabolism: glucose, fat and protein give ATP.
Vitamins as coenzymes: B1 → TPP, B3 → NAD+.
Deficiency diseases: beriberi, pellagra, anaemia.
Diet therapy: diabetes, PKU, lactose intolerance.
4 · Significance. Helps a dietitian understand why a diet works, read lab reports and plan therapeutic diets.
5 · Nutrition link. Biochemical tests (haemoglobin, albumin, blood glucose) often detect a deficiency before signs appear.
6 · Close in one line. Biochemistry is the scientific base on which nutrition and dietetics stand.
Scoring tip: One example per link earns the marks. Beriberi, pellagra and PKU are the easiest to quote.
Write-up practice
The check looks for key words only. It does not grade your answer and never writes it for you.
