RNA: types and functions sheet
5-mark answer frame

Write a short note on the types of RNA and their functions.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Open in two lines. RNA (ribonucleic acid) is a usually single-stranded nucleic acid with ribose and uracil. Three main types work together to make protein.
  2. 2 · Draw the tRNA cloverleaf. [Diagram: tRNA cloverleaf with acceptor arm (3′ CCA), D arm, anticodon arm, variable arm and TΨC arm]
  3. 3 · Main types.
    • mRNA: carries codons from DNA to ribosome; 5′ cap and poly-A tail.
    • tRNA: brings amino acids; anticodon pairs with codon.
    • rRNA: forms ribosomes; peptidyl transferase activity.
  4. 4 · Other RNAs. hnRNA (mRNA precursor), snRNA (splicing), miRNA (gene silencing).
  5. 5 · Significance. Together they turn the genetic code into protein (translation).
  6. 6 · Nutrition link. A missing essential amino acid halts protein synthesis; cereal–pulse mixes supply them all.
  7. 7 · Close in one line. Sum up: mRNA is the message, tRNA the carrier, rRNA the factory.

Scoring tip: For 5 marks, a neat cloverleaf and a three-row table are enough.

Write-up practice

The check looks for key words only. It does not grade your answer and never writes it for you.
